THOROLD, ON –/COMMUNITYWIRE/– Members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees 1287 will be holding a rally at the Niagara Region headquarters on Thursday evening, ahead of the Regional Council meeting.

CUPE 1287 is calling on Niagara Region to invest in the wellbeing of the workers who deliver vital public services. In ongoing negotiations, the employer has failed to acknowledge and address the growing income insecurity among CUPE members amidst rising inflation. Based on a union survey, 34% of CUPE 1287 members have been forced to take on additional employment to supplement their incomes.

“Investing in the wellbeing of workers is an investment in public services,” says Judy Murray, the president of CUPE 1287, referring to the retention and recruitment challenges at Niagara Region. “Experienced and trained workers are routinely quitting because they feel unappreciated and undervalued. If the Region of Niagara wants us to continue to deliver high quality of public services, it must take our concerns seriously.”

At the rally on Thursday evening, CUPE 1287 members will be joined by CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn. Hahn will address the rally alongside CUPE 1287 President Judy Murray, and her colleagues.
