Begins: 30 April 2024
Location: Caledon East, ON

CALEDON, ON –(COMMUNITYWIRE)– Road equipment operators, arborists, horticulturists, and other outside workers for the Town of Caledon are joining community members and allies to rally outside Caledon town hall on Tuesday as their union advocates for the high-quality services for residents and a fair deal for workers.

These workers have a longstanding connection with the Town of Caledon. Their skilled labour and experience ensure that Caledon stays pristine and safe throughout urban, commercial, farming, and forested areas. The risk of downloading then contracting out services is of particular concern as the quality of work would likely decline.

CUPE 966 represents 3,500 workers across Peel Region, and Unit 7 represents 110 outside workers in Caledon. These workers, currently in bargaining with the Town of Caledon, are responsible for a wide array of public services including snow clearing from streets and sidewalks, maintaining public parks, playgrounds, community centers, libraries, public restrooms, and road safety and repairs.

The increased cost of living in Caledon along with less competitive wages will have adverse effects on hiring and retaining staff, in turn affecting the quality of services for all residents. This is especially important now as the town’s population is increasing at a rapid rate.

CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn will speak at the rally alongside local allies and workers. These workers are asking the Caledon community to attend the rally and show their support for the essential services CUPE 966 members provide.

SPEAKERS:
Fred Hahn, President of CUPE Ontario.

WHEN:
Tuesday, April 30, 6:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

WHERE:
Caledon Town Hall, 6311 Old Church Road, Caledon East.
