TORONTO, ON –(COMMUNITYWIRE)– Fourteen full-time municipal workers, members of CUPE Local 1490, have been on strike since October 15. On April 2, the striking workers and allies are holding a solidarity rally outside a mining company that’s currently looking for workers in the Township.

“The Toronto-based mining company STLLR is putting up job postings in Black River-Matheson, meaning there will be an influx of workers who will either reside in or commute into the Township,” said Fred Hahn, President of CUPE Ontario. “They, like current residents, will have to rely on the services Local 1490 members would love to get back to delivering and STLLR needs to join our call to get the Township to the table and come up with a better offer. Additionally, the Township has taken the draconian step of banning all CUPE members across the country from three municipal sites. So, CUPE members, the OFL, other unions and community members, are taking to the streets here in Toronto to bring attention to this.”

WHO:
Serge Bouchard, President of CUPE Local 1490; Fred Hahn, President of CUPE Ontario; Laura Walton, President of the Ontario Federation of Labour; Krista Laing, Chair of CUPE Ontario’s Municipal Sector.

WHAT:
Striking Northern workers, and their allies, bring labour action to a Toronto mining company.

WHERE:
181 Bay St., Suite 4260, Toronto, ON

WHEN:
April 2, 2024, from 11:30 am – 1:30 pm

-30-
