Community newspapers are now able to enter the National Newspaper Awards

  • Must first apply for eligibility
  • Applications for eligibility must be received by December 12, 2019
  • Entries can be submitted between December 15, 2019 and January 15, 2020

Did you know that community newspapers and other non-broadcast organizations that publish original content online most days are now able to enter their work in the National Newspaper Awards?

Revisions to contest rules approved by the NNA Board of Governors in 2018 included a provision to open the competition to community newspapers provided that they publish original content (in print or digitally) at least five days a week. The provision also applied to digital-only news organizations that publish original content at least five days a week.

To determine eligibility of organizations seeking to enter the competition for the first time, NNA Governors approved the establishment of a formal process that required organizations to first apply for eligibility. For the 2019 contest, applications must be received by Thursday, December 12. Organizations that apply will receive a questionnaire and must return it promptly so that the application can be considered and decided upon before the contest is opened to entries on December 15.

To apply for eligibility and obtain a questionnaire, or to request additional information, contact NNA Executive Director Paul Woods (exec@nna-ccj.ca).

The 2019 contest will be open to entries from December 15 to January 15. The 2019 competition covers work published between January 1 and December 31, 2019.
